At Refugee Empowerment Program, we delight in welcoming the “stranger” as Jesus taught us to do in Matthew 25:35. All of us have strangers that live among us and each of us has been a stranger at some time in our lives. Do you take the time to get to know the strangers in your neighborhood who may look, dress or speak differently than you do? You may be surprised to know that over 200 “strangers” immigrate to our city each year seeking refuge from war, poverty, and other desolate conditions in their homeland. Many of these have very little understanding of the American culture and need help acclimating to our city and to our culture.
Since 2002, REP has been helping to educate, equip, encourage and empower these survivors—both adults and youth–to rebuild their lives through our afterschool program, adult ESL classes, childcare, and community outreach programs. Through the relationships that are being developed and the skills learned in these programs, REP is not only breaking down the barriers that once separated us, but are also helping prepare the youth and adults to live successfully in their new home.
You can join us in showing Jesus’ love to our new neighbors by serving as after-school tutor, small group mentor, adult ESL instructor, pre-GED instructor or childcare assistant. We provide training and flexible commitments.
